History
Lineage Dance is a contemporary dance company dedicated to raising support and awareness for nonprofit organizations, as well as to making the arts accessible to audiences of all demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Lineage is known throughout the community for artistic excellence as well as giving back through dance and strives to build community through the arts – reaching across barriers of age, ethnicity and ability. One of the most important components of Lineage’s mission is to make the art of dance accessible to every age and stage of life and develop audiences that feel fully engaged in dance by offering opportunities to deepen understanding through education and participation.
Since its founding in 1999 by Hilary Thomas, the dance company has presented hundreds of concerts and raised hundreds of thousands for organizations such as the Planned Parenthood, Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance, the MD Anderson Cancer Center Young Survivors Program, the Hope and Light Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Constance G. Zahorik Breast Center at Huntington Hospital, Young & Healthy, Five Acres and many other important health, educational, arts and social service agencies.
Lineage Dance’s repertoire is athletic, energetic and emotional, and many of the pieces tell compelling stories inspired by nonprofit partners and charitable causes. Works include “Healing Blue” which tells the story of seven women as they fight breast cancer and has raised funds for breast cancer-related causes nationwide, “Dancing Through the Ages” which explores the power of dance at all ages and stages of life and has raised funds to provide free healthcare to uninsured children, and “The Brain in Motion” which explores the human brain, and has raised funds for Alzheimer’s disease research. Lineage Dance currently presents See the Music Dance, a series of performance events providing live, original music from some of the LA area’s top musicians in collaboration with the contemporary choreography of Hilary Thomas.
In May of 2010, the company opened The Lineage Performing Arts Center to build community through the arts and to further the mission of Lineage Dance: to make the arts accessible to all. Voted “Best Dance Studio” by Pasadena Weekly, LPAC provides the greater San Gabriel Valley/Pasadena area with a comprehensive arts resource and a community hub that hosts a variety of events including dance and music performances, theatre productions, art exhibitions, fundraising events, film screenings, private gatherings and more. In 2020 the Lineage Performing Arts Center relocated to a new site in Northeast Pasadena, with the tremendous support of the Ahmanson Foundation and countless donors who believe in the work.
Free weekly classes are offered for those in our community living with Parkinson’s Disease, Cancer, Down Syndrome and Stroke Surviovors. Services also include private lessons and Personal Training. The Center hosts an array of local and regional companies including Parson’s Nose, 89Boom! and the Summer Concert Music Series. Lineage Dance presents benefit dance concerts and community events for all ages in partnership with area nonprofit organizations.
